Hallfield Maps

Sitting east of Wetherby town centre in West Yorkshire, Hallfields is a predominantly council-built residential area that backs directly onto the Horsefair Shopping Centre, putting local shops within easy walking distance. Bus routes operated by First Leeds connect the estate with Wetherby bus station, City Square in Leeds, and a range of surrounding communities including Collingham, Seacroft, Oakwood, Harehills, and Ainsty.

History and Development

Before housing arrived, much of the land here formed the grounds of Hallfield Mansions, a large house that stood derelict for many years before being replaced in the 2000s by a medical centre. From the 1930s to the 1950s, the area also housed HMS Ceres, a Royal Navy shore establishment. Post-war demand for social housing drove the construction of the first parts of the Hallfields Estate in the 1950s, with early streets laid out along First, Second, Third, and Fourth Avenue. A second phase followed in the 1960s, extending the estate around Ceres Road, which is separated from the earlier streets by a cemetery. Further housing was also built in the 1960s to the north, constructed by the Home Office for staff at the nearby Wetherby Young Offenders Institution. Later additions include 1970s properties on Burrel Close, the Chase, Freemans Way, and Saddlers Walk, as well as some houses built in the 2010s.

The Estate Today

House prices in Hallfields tend to be the lowest in Wetherby, sitting below those of other council areas in the town such as those around Ainsty. Around half of the housing stock is now privately owned. Most properties are low-rise, two or three-bedroom semi-detached or terraced houses built in the 1950s, though the estate is particularly noted for its unusual chalet-style terraced houses. In 2009, community notice boards were installed around the estate to publicise local events and issues. Anti-social behaviour around the playing fields, local shops, and the Freemans Way underpass prompted Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Police to carry out community consultation and increase foot patrols. In June 2013, the Mason Fields playground was temporarily closed by councillors on public health grounds after the site had been occupied by travellers and the play equipment damaged. Among the local amenities are a newsagent, a community centre, a surgery, a cemetery, playing fields, a junior school, and Wetherby High School.
