Hunslet Maps

Lying just south of the River Aire, Hunslet is a suburb of Leeds in West Yorkshire, sitting close to the city centre and bordered by other inner-city communities. Its name is pronounced ‘hʊnslɪt’, a remnant of its long history as one of the oldest settlements in the Leeds area. Once a heavily industrialised district, Hunslet was at the core of Leeds’ manufacturing output during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with engineering works, potteries, and textile production shaping much of its character.

Industrial Heritage

Hunslet’s industrial past left a lasting mark on its streets and buildings. The suburb was particularly associated with locomotive manufacturing, and several large engineering firms operated here for generations. That era of heavy industry has largely given way to housing, retail, and light commercial use, though the area still retains traces of its working-class roots in its architecture and street layout. Its proximity to Leeds city centre, just a short distance to the north, makes it a practical base within the wider urban area.

Getting Around

Hunslet is well connected to central Leeds by road and public transport, with regular bus services running between the suburb and the city centre. The main road network links it easily to other parts of South Leeds and the wider West Yorkshire region, making it accessible for both residents and visitors exploring the southern neighbourhoods of the city.
