Headingley Maps

A suburb of Leeds in West Yorkshire, Headingley (pronounced “HED-ing-lee”) sits to the north-west of the city centre and is one of the most recognisable parts of Leeds. Its name traces back to the Old English form Hedingleia, a reminder of its long history before Leeds grew outwards to absorb it. Today it is best known as a student and young professional area, shaped in large part by its proximity to the University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett University, which draw thousands of residents into its terraced streets each academic year.

Character and Location

Headingley sits within West Yorkshire and shares boundaries with other inner suburbs of Leeds. The main thoroughfare running through the area connects it to the city centre to the south-east, making it straightforward to reach by bus or on foot. The suburb has a well-established high street with a mix of independent shops, cafes, and bars that give it a lively but unpretentious atmosphere. Headingley Stadium, a ground shared by the Yorkshire cricket and Leeds Rhinos rugby league teams, is one of the area’s most prominent landmarks and draws visitors from across the country.

Getting Around

Headingley has its own railway station on the Harrogate Line, offering regular services into Leeds city centre and northward towards Harrogate. Frequent bus services also connect the suburb to central Leeds, making it a practical base for those working or studying in the city. The surrounding streets are largely residential, with Victorian and Edwardian terraces forming the bulk of the housing stock.
